Veritas NetBackup 10 – Industry Snapshot

Veritas Further Addresses Multi-Cloud Management with Autonomous Data Management

Through technical evolution of its NetBackup (NBU) data protection software platform, Veritas has been steadily building broader multi-cloud data management capabilities. NBU 8.3 saw the adoption of an API-first architecture for cross-domain optimization. NBU was shifted to a containerized microservices architecture with Version 9.0, and it was then pushed to an elastic cloud delivery model with auto-scaling capabilities with Version 9.1.

NBU 10, launched February 23, 2022, represents the next iteration of this “next-generation” architecture. Veritas describes NBU 10 as being based on “Cloud Scale Technology” meaning it taps architectural principles of the hyperscale public cloud providers, including compartmentalizing services to make them very specific, to make them more mobile, to streamline upgrades, and to increase resiliency.

Examples of cloud-driven capabilities that Veritas has added into NBU include the ability of the platform to operate on Azure and Amazon, to utilize cloud platforms’ native capabilities including elastic snapshot and snapshot management, and to protect SaaS applications. The architecture is designed that, with upcoming releases, services such as the NBU data deduplication engine may be released via cloud marketplaces.

Veritas’ ultimate vision is that of “autonomous” data management that applies insights and intelligence to enable data management to “just happen.” To achieve this objective, Veritas is building automation powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning into the platform, in order to optimize data protection and management with self-provisioning, self-configuring, self-optimizing, and self-service capabilities. Additionally, this portfolio roadmap is yielding enhanced security capabilities, such as the automated, event-driven malware scanning and the support for immutable cloud storage from Azure, AWS, Seagate that were added with NBU 10.
